My best lunch spots in Japan!

If you are visiting Japan you might assume that the best restaurants will be found in big cities like Tokyo or Osaka. Whilst these kinds of places do have many amazing eateries, I want to let you know that is true across all of Japan!  I live in a pretty rural area of Shikoku, far from any big cities, but I am lucky to have a lot of wonderful restaurants near me. Here are my five of my top lunch spots in Japan that I have discovered so far!

Good Time Cafe

This is a relatively new place that I visited earlier this year. Good Time is open for lunch and dinner. Inside the restaurant the decor is bright and modern. The lunch menu includes curry dishes and hamburger sets. Apparently their speciality is eggs so I will have to go back there for brunch soon!

My recommended dish: hamburger lunch set

Triton Restaurant

A lovely restaurant and bakery in Nankoku, Triton serve amazing pizzas for lunch, along with delicious chicken dishes and salads too. I also love how they give you a little egg timer with your cup of tea so you can make sure its brewed for the exact right amount of time. I recommend stopping at the bakery on the way out to buy a freshly baked baguette or a slice of cake for the car journey home!

My recommended dish: stone baked pizza

English Garden House

This is one of those places you would never find without someone telling you about it! Located in Kagami in Konan City, this is a gorgeous little café tucked away from the road that feels like someone’s house. The owners are a super friendly couple who open the cafe for breakfast and lunch.  You can sip on a coffee and look out onto the beautiful gardens.

My recommended dish: breakfast sausage set!

Seahouse

The location is what makes this place really special. Perched on a clifftop jutting out over the Pacific Ocean, Seahouse is located between Yasu and Geisei villages. This glass enclosed restaurant offers amazing 360 degree views. The food is a mix of Japanese and Western, with a wide variety of lunch sets available. My tip is to arrive early as this place is really popular!

My recommended dish: steak lunch set

Who wouldn’t want to eat here?

Kohanyu

Another one of those places that I had happened to stumble across whilst out driving. Kohanyu is situated up in the mountains in Kami-shi, and the location is breathtaking! You have to follow signs from the main road to find the building, and once you get there you can visit the onsen before having lunch in the restaurant. The best part about eating here is the huge decked terrace patio, overlooking a lake, surrounded by nothing but forests. I had a delicious coffee and cake set here, but plan to return very soon for lunch!

My recommended dish: try one of their delicious cake sets!

So there you have it, five of my top lunch spots in Japan.  If you are visiting the area, be sure to try some of them out! If not, make sure you venture down into those basements and side streets to find the best restaurants in Japan! Be adventurous!
